– ADHD
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder affecting the executive functioning element of the brain; where tasks are undertaken in unison, thinking and acting simultaneously, managing time, and controlling impulse tend to be impaired. It is commonly characterised by difficulties paying attention, excessive activity, and difficulty inhibiting impulsive behaviours. The symptoms appear before a child is twelve years old, are present for more than six months, and occur in at least two settings (such as school, home, or recreational activities). In children, difficulties in prolonged concentration and attentiveness may result in poor school performance. ADHD typically lessens in intensity with age, and by cultivating healthy, productive habits from a young age these difficulties can be alleviated. Despite being typically regarded as an impediment, those with ADHD readily engage in tasks they find interesting, and excel in these. Fortunately, even more severe effects of ADHD can be improved with special learning techniques to improve attentiveness and prolonged focus which we apply consistently at Mrs. Sam’s. With the correct guidance and encouragement, children with ADHD have the ability to achieve equivalent or better grades than their neurotypical peers.
– AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER (ASD)
Autism spectrum disorder is a developmental disability caused by differences in the brain. Those with ASD often have difficulties with social communication and interaction, emotional and behavioural regulation, sensory processing, and restricted or repetitive behaviors or interests. However, the abilities of children with autism can vary significantly, for instance some may have advanced conversational skills whereas others may be nonverbal. People with ASD may also have different ways of learning, moving, or paying attention. Although autism is a lifelong condition, effective intervention and guidance can improve a child’s functioning, with structure and routine, individually catered instruction and goals, and support with communicative and interactive skills.
A person with autism spectrum disorder can experience the following:
- Difficulty with communication and social interaction
- Repetitive interests and activities
- Attachments to objects or routines
Autism spectrum disorder affects the needs, skills and abilities of each person differently. Some of the signs may not be obvious to parents, so young children are sometimes not diagnosed until later in childhood.
